2024 Climate Solutions Symposium

The Inaugural CBE Climate Solutions Symposium took place on May 23, 2024. The event began with a reception and poster session, followed by an invited lecture “Every Project is a Climate Opportunity” with Don Davies, PE, SE and Joan Crooks.

36 research posters were submitted and accepted to the symposium. The posters covered a range of topics, from affordable housing in Indonesia (Bella Septianti, Architecture/Design Technology), to CLT and structural steel comparative lifecycle assessment (Mira Malden, Community, Environment, and Planning). Posters were submitted by a wide range of student teams, studio and lab teams, and faculty and staff as well. Two posters were selected to receive $250 awards and recognition. The first award was for Research Communications, and was awarded to the poster entitled “Designing a Climate Responsible City.” This poster was submitted by the UW Green Futures Lab team. The second poster award was for Research Innovation, and was awarded to the poster entitled “Uneven distribution of urban greenery could lead to community vulnerability,” by Yingjie Liu, Xinyue Gu, Zeyu Wang, and Alex Anderson. Over 65 individuals attended the poster session.

Following the poster session, invited guest lecturers Don Davies, PE, SE and Joan Crooks spoke about their experience during a local renovation project, “Hubbard’s Corner,” near Green Lake in Seattle. On this project, Don and Joan tested novel solutions to achieving low carbon, sustainable, climate smart building design in the multi-use building project. The lecture is available to view here.

Submitted posters were reviewed by Narjes Abbasabadi and Jan Whittington. The event was made possible by the CBE Dean’s Office, and supported by Associate Dean for Research Carrie Sturts Dossick, and members of the CBE Advancement team including Babs Pinette, Alex Haslam, and Alex Blair.
