Abstract

Affordable Housing in the United States addresses the issue of affordability of housing, or the lack thereof, going beyond conventional policy discussions to consider fundamental questions such as: What makes housing affordable and for whom is it affordable? What are the consequences of a lack of affordable housing? How is affordable housing created? And what steps can be taken to ensure all people have access to affordable housing?

With the understanding that different households face different challenges, the book begins by breaking down the variables relevant to the study of affordable housing, including housing costs, household income, geographic location, and market forces, to help readers understand and quantify affordability at the individual and societal level. Part II examines the consequences of unaffordable housing, highlighting racial inequities in housing access and affordability, and multiple forms of housing precarity including eviction and homelessness. Part III explores the entities involved in providing affordable housing such as local and federal governments, regulatory agencies, non-profit organizations, and for-profit developers. In Part IV, case studies from US cities demonstrate the complex web of organizations, policies, and market conditions that influence housing affordability, revealing substantial regional variations in access and policy response. Part V proposes a future roadmap and outlines four potential states with radically different outcomes for the affordable housing system in the United States.

Abstract

Growing global imperatives to address sustainability concerns have boosted the importance and prominence of green construction projects worldwide. However, project managers may lack the specialist knowledge and/or technical skills to overcome the unique challenges to successfully deliver suitably sustainable green projects. Artificial Intelligence in Performance-Driven Design: Theories, Methods, and Tools explores the application of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically machine learning (ML), for performance modeling within the built environment. This work establishes the theoretical foundations and methodological frameworks for utilizing AI/ML, with an emphasis on multi-scale modeling encompassing energy flows, environmental quality, and human systems.

Summary

We would like to think that we ‘know’ what goes into making a modern building. But the truth is that no one, not even architects, knows. The OUR [Office for Uncertainty Research] spent three years studying a single, relatively modest modern house located in Seattle, WA. The research focused on four vectors: Atomic Consciousness that dates back to the Big Bang and the earliest Super Novas: Production Consciousness that involves a vast array of ingredients that are combined to make architectural products: Labor Consciousness that spans a wide spectrum of temporal and economic conditions; and Source Consciousness that is multilayered and global in its reach. Though much was learned, it became clear that a huge proportion of what we ‘know’ about the house was unknowable, not because our epistemological instruments aren’t strong enough or calibrated precisely enough, but because things themselves are indeterminate, uncertain. This begs the question about agency. If we are to critique our profession and even improve some of its claims about Sustainability, then we must develop a more robust understanding of the building industry and the sourcing and making of materials. We must even develop a stronger awareness of the history of atoms and how architecture brings that history into a remarkable focus.

Abstract
